Dr. Rupa Renganathan is a pioneering radiologist with approximately 18 years of specialized experience in comprehensive breast care and advanced women’s imaging. Joining KMCH in 2007, she has established herself as a national leader in the field, becoming the first radiologist in India to lead a standalone clinical breast center.

Clinical Expertise & Innovations

Dr. Renganathan specializes in radiologist-led comprehensive breast care and is a trailblazer in minimally invasive interventions. Her clinical milestones include:

  • Cryoablation Pioneer: The first radiologist in India to treat breast cancer through cryoablation.
  • Vacuum-Assisted Excision (VAB): Holds the record for the highest number of VAB procedures (over 600) in India.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Pioneered MRI-guided and Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM) guided biopsies in South India.
  • Specialized Procedures: Expert in MRI-guided breast biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, wire localization, fallopian tube recanalization, and hysterosalpingography.

Professional Leadership & Academic Contributions

Dr. Renganathan serves as the Academic Head of DNB Radiology at KMCH and is the Course Director for India’s first NBE-accredited Fellowship in Breast Imaging (FNB).

  • National Roles: Joint Secretary of the Breast Imaging Society, India (BISI) and Founding General Secretary of the Society of Gynaecological Imaging and Interventions (SOGII).
  • International Roles: Member of the International Outreach Education Committee for the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), USA.
  • Editorial Work: Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Breast Imaging and Guest Editor for Gynaecological Imaging (ISGAR).
  • Mentorship: Leads the KMCH Breast Academy, the first Hologic training center in the Asia-Pacific region, mentoring radiologists globally.

Research & Publications

With approximately 40 peer-reviewed articles, her research focuses on advanced CEM and MRI techniques. Notable contributions include:

  • Developing a novel scoring system for architectural distortion on CEM.
  • Landmark research on ultrafast MRI for diagnosing ovarian torsion.
  • Delivered over 250 lectures and conducted 50+ hands-on training workshops internationally.

Awards & Recognition

  • Asia & India Book of Records: Highest number of screening mammography studies in a single day (Sept 2024).
  • ICRI President’s Appreciation Award: Recipient in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
  • Named Orations: Delivered the Dr. Diwan Chand Aggarwal Memorial Oration (2025) and the Dr. Ida B. Scudder Oration (2025).
  • Best Teacher Award: IRIA (2023).

Social Responsibility

Dr. Renganathan is the visionary behind Project HEAL, a mobile mammography initiative. She personally interprets over 4,000 mammograms annually, providing free population-based screening and diagnostic workups to thousands of underserved women.
