Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) stands at the forefront of advanced critical care with one of the most experienced ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) programs in Tamil Nadu. KMCH is recognized as a leading center for high-risk life support care in India.
When heart and lung function becomes critically weak, ECMO can provide vital support and a crucial window of time for recovery.

What is ECMO ?

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is an advanced life-support system used in severe, life-threatening conditions where the heart and/or lungs cannot function adequately on their own.
ECMO does not directly cure the disease. Instead, it temporarily performs the work of these organs — allowing the body time to rest, recover, and respond to treatment.

How ECMO Works?

  • Blood Extraction – Blood is gently drawn from the patient through specialized tubes
  • Oxygenation – A high-precision ECMO machine adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide
  • Recirculation – The oxygen-rich blood is safely returned to the body

ECMO CARE

Who May Need ECMO Support?

ECMO may be considered for patients with severe but potentially reversible conditions who are not responding to standard treatments such as ventilators, medications, or conventional cardiac support.

  • Severe respiratory failure
  • Acute lung injury
  • Advanced pneumonia complications
  • Cardiac failure
  • Post-cardiac surgery support
  • Severe viral lung infections
  • Selected trauma cases
  • Complex cardiac emergencies
  • Certain severe poisoning cases - where toxins temporarily affect the heart or lungs and advanced life support is needed while treatment takes effect

Early referral significantly improves outcomes. Timing is critical in ECMO eligibility.

WHY EARLY ECMO EVALUATION MATTERS

Delays in advanced life support can reduce survival chances. Early ECMO assessment helps doctors determine:

Choose Image Families are encouraged to discuss ECMO evaluation with their treating doctors when a critically ill patient shows no improvement with conventional treatment.
  • Whether ECMO is appropriate
  • The right timing for initiation
  • The expected benefit for the patient
  • Risk-benefit balance in critical cases
